A healthy lawn makes a very good filter for absorbing many things that can be washed into our streams. The ideal lawn is one that will grow best in your environment without lots of supplemental watering. We have all probably read about people living in desert areas in the country trying to grow lawns that require almost daily watering just to survive the summer heat. This is extremely foolish and short-sighted. Turf grasses were never intended to be grown everywhere.
. How Much Should I Water My Lawn?
Lawns should be watered thoroughly 2 to 3 times a week with approximately 1" to 1-1/2" of irrigation. Place a cat food or tuna can in the area you are watering. Once the pie pan is full, that area should be adequately watered. Record the time and now you know how long to run your sprinkler. Avoid water at early night or during the heat of the day. Early morning is best!
*The best time of the day to water is early morning before 10:00 am. If you water in the early afternoon the water evaporates too quickly. If possible, do not water after 4:00 pm or before 4:00 am (fungus disease activity is encouraged in dark !!
When Should I Cut My Grass?
Lawns should be maintained at a height of around 3 inches. Cutting grass too short will cause lawn stress and will also increase the amount of weeds in your lawn.
Hold off watering after fertilization
Use light watering to give the fertilizer the opportunity to be absorbed by the soil
